1. Quotes of the month

“The key to growth is the introduction of higher dimensions of consciousness into our awareness.”

-Lao Tzu, author of 'Tao Te Ching' and a contemporary of Confucius. Born around 600 BC)

“The first step therefore is to make the black man come to himself; to pump back life into his empty shell; to infuse him with pride and dignity, to remind him of his complicity in the crime of allowing himself to be misused and therefore letting evil reign supreme in the country of his birth.”

    - Steven Bantu Biko (South African freedom fighter and author of “I write what I like'. He was murdered in detention. September was Steven Biko Month, commemorating 30 years since his death)

“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

    - Albert Einstein.

September has been an inspiring month. I have had the opportunity to attend 3 events with world class speakers: Blair Singer, Allon Raiz and Bonnke Shipalana.

In one of the courses I attended I was tasked with delivering one of Gandhi's speeches. Gandhi says to men who are prepared to die to kill their oppressors:

'I praise such courage, I need such courage, for in this cause I too am prepared to die. But my friends there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.'

Powerful words. The question for me now is how do I take myself to the next level?

This is the question I ask you?

How do you BECOME?

I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

Much love and grace,

Jo

4. Feature Article: Making Conscious Decisions

Most teachers who have studied what it takes for people to grow, will emphasize awareness. You need to be aware of yourself, your feelings, your behavior and be conscious of your choices.

Most people are not aware. They are 'asleep' because they believe it is too uncomfortable to be awake. Life has a way waking us up when we try to avoid confronting ourselves.

Suddenly things fall apart and we find ourselves asking 'WHY?, Why me?' or blaming everything and everyone else for what is wrong in our life.

People who have been through traumatic experiences will often tell you it turned out to be the greatest gift. Think back to the times in your life when a traumatic event led you to have a great AHA! moment about yourself and your life. Each of us has these moments.

Such situations can open the door to a greater wisdom, can give us a chance to know what we don't know. And this awareness, allows us to decide if we want to "know" and, if we do, to take action. These moments are life changing.

You don't have to wait for a crisis. You can consciously change. How?

5. What you have to say?

"After doing some introspection about things that I'm passionate about, I decided to take a little step towards one of my passions. I love astronomy, I realized that I prefer reading about scientific findings about the universe and therefore decided to read more about the universe. I would not have been aware of this if it was not for your workshop. You have no idea as to how much these little things mean to someone." - Nkoli , University of Johannesburg

7. Positive news

"I think the press, including TV journalism, has an ethical responsibility, a sacred responsibility, a service mission ... to make good news just as entertaining (as we've made sexy the violence)."

- Marianne Williamson

This month has seen the start of Ramadan, Rosh Hashanah, Ethiopian Revolution Day, Ethiopian Millenemium Festival, and last but not least the 30 year commemoration of Steven Bantu Biko's death.

All on the 12 September.

You can listen to songs sung about Biko with Kalavati Entertainment

8. Reviews, Recommendations and Free Stuff

The Power of One Breakfast Event.

Yesterday I attended the Power of One breakfast, organized by Bonnke Shipalana, one of our article contributors. I was inspired.

Given Mkhari and Masingita Masunga shared how they were able to take life's challenges and turn the impossible into the possible. Bonnke encouraged us to find our purpose, nurture our talent, have vision and believe in ourselves.

I highly recommend you sign up for Bonnke's newsletters and talks. He holds these events in Johannesburg on the last Saturday of every month. To find out more about Bonnke, go here.

Sales and Leadership by Blair Singer, Sales Dogs

Last week, I attended a two day sales and leadership seminar. What an experience! Blair Singer is one of the world's authorities on sales and business.

He also happens to be a business partner and good friend to Robert Kiyosaki. Blair opened the course by telling us that the only person we will ever really need to sell to is ourselves.

Every day, we let our 'Little Voice' limit us and prevent us from getting out there and doing what needs to be done. We need to sell to ourselves, the idea that the job - or exercise program - is worth doing.

BAM! He had my attention. The two days saw us role playing sales techniques but, most importantly, taught us about what it takes to truly become great leaders.

The next even is in Arizona, November 11th.
