Our approach:

Stress management means nearly total irresponsibility: a sleeping pill every night, endless television (superlatively presented), answering mail only when I feel worldly or sociable.

- Harold Brodkey , American novelist and short-story writer

Just kidding...

But hey, no doubt if you haven't done the sleeping pills and the endless nights of television, you may well be exploding on the road. Go straight to

    Symptoms of stress!

How you deal with stress, determines your ability to enjoy life and cope with change. There is a balance of stress that allows you to live at your full potential.

In 1908, Harvard researchers Robert M.Yerkes and John D. Dodson formulated the Yerkes-Dodson Law to describe this optimal stress curve (see the diagram on the above)

    • Too much, and your adrenaline levels shoot sky high, leading to burnout
    • To little and you have no 'oomph', leading to lethargy and boredom.

An awareness of these symptoms of stress can let you know when you are outside this optimal zone....

If you are feeling burnt out, this article by http://www.motivation-for-dreamers.com suggests you start by taking time out!

....Like a baby, I didn't know why I screamed, kicked and felt so bad. I didn't even have the word stress on my lips, never mind the knowledge that stress needs to be managed.

Actually, stress and I have an interesting love / hate relationship. The truth is, I'm an adrenaline junky. I LOVE drama and adventure. Except that I burnout pretty quickly.

Years ago, I realized I'm addicted to crisis. I weaned myself off the highs because lows that followed, just weren't worth it. My lifestyle invited drama. So did my work.

Too much alcohol and an abusive boyfriend were just some of things that contributed to a crash. At the time I worked with homeless children and their problems often seemed insoluble. It was one emergency after the other.

And I, after all, was a hero.

My life was filled with drama. But stress was eroding my core. And none of it, I believed, had anything to do with my choices...

    Causes of stress!

    ...Sound familiar?

What is the cause of your stress? It's not you, is it?

    • Your family

    • Your horrible boss
    • Too much to do
    • No money
    • The neighborhood you live in
    • Your lazy employees
    • Your car has packed in

    Right?
