Change and Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship and change are close friends. To succeed you must not only cope with change but engineer it.

During the time I coached at the Raizcorp Business Prosperator, Raizcorp went through a tremendous amount of change in a few months. Allon Raiz, CEO of Raizcorp, compares the journey to riding a wave. In the space of one month, Allon had a baby, a new house, a new office, several new staff, a new TV show and the news that I was to leave to build my business.

In the Raizcorp Newsletter, Allon wrote his perspective on change and the entrepreneur that I think you will find useful.

Change and the Entrepreneur, by Allon Raiz

"The difference between entrepreneurs and most people is the fact that we handle change better than most. Some even thrive on it.

Handling change is like surfing, only the waves comefrom all directions, even from above. Keeping your balance is the trick. But without the change there is no forward motion and you fall off anyway.

As a Durbanite (South African city Durban), I pride myself on never having surfed, but I did observe how the great surfers always anticipated a good wave. They knew exactly when to start paddling - not too early and not too late.

The same can be said of handling change in a business. Anticipating the direction and size of the change is key, you align your business in the anticipated direction and then you start paddling like crazy.

Oh yes, don’t forget to stand up.

Sometimes when a big wave of change comes, the good surfers simply dip their board and go under. When they float to the top they look for the next wave which is practical to surf.

Over the last few months I feel that I have surfed a tsunami.

The most important thing is that I have been planning as best I could for this change since last year, and still there were all sorts of unanticipated events.

Who could have foreseen an electrician who loved being electrocuted, painters who could not paint, builders who could not build, and of course landlords that had no sense of justice?

But we made it through, a bit battered and bruised, but through none the less. I am just resting on my board for a short while to catch my breath as I anticipate the next wave.

Thank you all for being so patient during our big wave of change."

The entrepreneurs and employees of small businesses, need to handle change and stress more than most. You need to be aware of this and teach not only yourself but your team how to prepare for the stresses that come along with change. If you don't, you'll find people will be resentful, depressed, insecure, unwilling and generally resistant to the changes you want to implement. To learn more about stress management, click here!
