What does it take to be an entrepreneur?
I didn't start out as an entrepreneur. My negative perception about business and business owners didn't allow me to even contemplate it. The world of business in my view was cut throat and dirty. If you played in this world, I believed you were greedy. During one of the courses I was taking, my beliefs were challenged. It wasn't comfortable. But I saw that my perceptions were the stories I had created in my head. Sure, there are business people who exploit and do dirty deals. But there are plenty of others who are building a business with integrity and heart....
...And so started my journey to discover what makes a successful entrepreneur and what makes a successful business? And is it possible to have a successful home based business?
I was a Failure!
I may have been a brilliant facilitator but I was operating on my own. In business, I was a failure and a quitter. At the age of 32, I had no business skills and a bag full of money issues. I didn't know where to begin.
But I had come too far to give up on myself. I knew in my heart that this was the path for me. All I had to do was learn. And so, I became a willing student.
After years of free-lancing, I spent time with a fantastic network marketing company and I failed. I tried a few home based business opportunities and I failed. I went through several starts ups and business partners. And I failed each time.
I wanted to blame the businesses and partners. But there was one cold truth I needed to face...
... The common denominator was ME... I needed to change.
I read many books, attended courses and researched my failures and other people's successes.
I took two life changing decisions. One was to take a course that changed my thinking and built my faith. The other was to spend two years with a business incubator learning everything I could.
I coached the entrepreneurs in their personal development.This gave me three things:
- 1. The benefit of seeing what a powerful difference personal development makes in business.
2. It taught me the basics of business.
3. And it gave me insight into a wide variety of industries. Each with their own challenges.
Yet the fundamentals were the same
In this period I was mentored by the incubator CEO, Allon RaizBusiness Success Principles!
People failed or succeeded for the same reasons. It didn't matter whether people worked from home building a home based business, or whether they had a team of 100 people in fancy offices. The same principles applied.
