"I've always been attracted to the arts, but I think at some point I told my parents or somebody in passing that I wanted to be a doctor and so people got very happy. In matric I said, "I can't do this", so I thought I'd become a lawyer, thinking I could sneak arts in. It was quite interesting for a while, because it was a new discipline and I was also doing subjects like philosophy. But when I saw through it, I saw through it in a big way. And realized again that I couldn't spend my life doing that. So I bunked a lot of lectures, wrote a lot of poems, did a lot of soul searching and realized that this is what I want to do. At that time I did not know how it would take shape, how it would be productive, how it was going to make sense in my life, but I kind of just left the security of doing something that I knew was going to pay the bills and kill my spirit, and chose doing something that was going to feed my spirit and figure out how I was going to pay the bills."
