Before you can succeed with a 'reverence object lesson', I'd like to engage you in a discussion. We also share a lesson idea and invite you to contribute at the end of this page.
What does Reverence mean to you? Just how far do you take it?
Gary Zukhav, (in his best seller, Seat of the Soul) describes reverence as "an attitude of honoring Life.... Reverence is also simply the experience of accepting that all Life is, in and of itself, of value. Reverence automatically brings forth patience.... Reverence permits non-judgmental justice....Reverence is a perception of the soul."
Do you practise reverence in your daily life?
It's easy to teach. But the challenge is to 'be the change we want to see in the world.' If you complain about the crime, poverty and violence, the only place you need to look to, is inside. To every thought, speech and action that is not in the spirit of reverence. This is how we change the world....
This is why I encourage you to develop your own personal mastery.
...BUT easy for me to say. Yes?
Harder to implement in my own life. Especially when I'm stressed. How do you teach young children or adults 'reverence object lessons' if you have not grasped it's meaning - at least on some level?
Do you even revere yourself?
What negative thoughts do you have about yourself? What habits do you have that hurt you? When do you think negatively about others?
Zukhav (p33, Seat of Soul) takes the concept of reverence even to the treatment of animals and their value. And therefore their right to Life.
TASK| Write a list of thoughts, patterns, relationships, habits and activities where you could transform your attitude of reverence. |
Can you imagine how different our world would be if we each brought reverence to our interactions and activities? You can teach children at a sub conscious lesson to revere ALL life, and a 'reverence object lesson' is a great way to do it.

Change Object Lesson
A 'reverence object lesson' is easy when children are young. But once negative thinking, hatred, prejudices, low self esteem and bad habits have set in, the challenge becomes great. But not impossible.
It might help to understand more about change and the psychological effects of stress before you embark on lessons that ask people to shift their thinking and habits. It will explain why people are afraid of, and therefore resist change.
Any change is stressful. A 'change object lesson' is designed to shift people's thinking and patterns. This couldn't be more true when teaching people about reverence. Why? Because the lack of reverence is rooted in people's fear. And fear creates resistance.

If necessary, at the end you can explain that even if you clean up harmful words and actions, there are marks left behind on the people and the world.
Every thought, word and action has a consequence.
