On the one hand, team building is about effective team work that creates better results. On the other hand, it expands spiritual and emotional intelligence. The process can build personal mastery. Therefore I believe the process of team building is as important as the outcome.

My team building definition includes the usual definition of team building and I've taken the concept further, drawing from the African philosophy of humanity.

There are various methodologies to consider in team building.
1. Facilitation methods;

2. Coaching methods.

3. Team building techniques and approaches;

4. Team building activities, exercises and games.This includes choosing between outdoor or adventure activities or various indoor games and exercises;

5. Experiential learning;

6. The use of language and inner conversations.

7. Paradigm shifting methodogies;

8. Goal setting processes.

School Team Building Activities

Youth team building activities rely on similar principles to any corporate team building program. But there are extra issues to consider whether it's a middle or high school group.

A facilitator needs to take precautions to ensure the physical and emotional safety when designing team building games for children or team building activities for teens.

Effective team building exercises will evoke sensitive issues.

Working with adolescents comes with new challenges. So learning as much about adolescent group facilitation will help you stay a step ahead.
You will need to understand teenagers and related issues.

Young children even more so. I recommend that you do a short course in child development. I also recommend learning facilitation skills.

Team Building Companies

If you're looking for a team building company or consultant, find out what their programs involve.

Many corporate and school programs are run by events companies who have little or no skilled group facilitators. It's not enough to have fun outdoor games and activities. The activity is a team building technique not an end in itself.

A highly skilled facilitator will unpack and draw out the themes and learning, marking change points. The end outcome should include a team and personal development plan with follow up support, measurements and evaluations.
Check if they have tools to acknowledge and celebrate individual and personal breakthroughs.
